Mobile Payment Platform Security

Mobile device credit/debit card readers are an emerging platform (some examples below) with already an enormous market. However, are these secure? More or less secure than traditional card readers? More importantly, what are the security and privacy perceptions of these technologies from the customer standpoint? Imagine you are riding a cab and not carrying any cash; the driver takes out his iPhone with a tiny reader to read your credit card. What would you do — make payment this way or ask the driver to drive to an ATM machine to withdraw some cash?

These are some of the questions we are exploring in this research.

Joint project with Prof. David Schwebel (Psychology) and Prof. John Sloan (Justice Sciences). Students involved: Jacinta Cai (CIS), Manasvee Godbole (Psychology), and Oliver Nick Harper (CIS).
